The Rainbow Falls is situated 1.5 miles (2.41 kilometers) from Hilo, which is the biggest city in Hawaii. Its original name is Waianuenue, which means rainbow water, but was given the name Rainbow due to its spectacular reflection of rainbows. I would recommend this running tour to anybody, it's a great way to do an early morning run up Diamond Head and to start your day perfectly. Yahnny was great company, knowledgable about the area and a good coach a couple of days later she emailed me with the photos she'd take on our run, the GPX file and a link to a site which replays your run as as fly-over animated view. When we got back to our starting point Yahnny did a whole stretching session and provided a couple of protein bars. Puu Maelieli Trail (Kaneohe Bay Pillbox) Location. The pillboxes have the best views on the island. Its a relatively easy hike to a waterfall and pool deep enough for jumping. The pillbox is one of many small bunkers/lookouts built by the military in World War II. On the run back the park was starting to get busier with other people which slowed progress a little so I'm glad we'd had an early start (6:15 am) and at least avoided most people on the way out. This waterfall hike on Oahu is best attempted after some rain. We then did some yoga for 20 minutes or so on a flat concrete area, all the time enjoying the views of the ocean and Waikiki. The whole park is very striking but the view from the rim out to the ocean and towards Waikiki and Honolulu was stunning. It wasn't as tall as Manoa, but it was quiet and peacful and way less muddy. Rainbow Falls is without a doubt, one of the most popular waterfalls on the Big Island. Follow that to the stream that leads to the waterfall. Then you'll get to a section that has 5 (I think it was 5) fallen very large tree trunks, as the last one TURN RIGHT (there is an arrow cared, but worn, into the tree) if you miss this turn you'll end up at the Old Pali Road. Follow the path up, you'll eventually get to a stone path way (in our case it was very mud covered) and it was very over grown (felt like we were going to the witch's house). You'll get to a graffiti building, you'll see the path to the LEFT before that (don't go around it). Park fatherest corner from the club house and follow the paved pathway. We did read other reviews that the golf course doesn't always let you park here (busy weekends), we were there on a Friday afternoon and it was empty. We parked at the golf course and did the hike from here (vs Old Pali Road access). We went during the wet season so it was a muddy hike.
